More companies are embedding sustainability in their daily business, and they are hiring sustainability professionals for their green drive.

With increased awareness on climate change and sustainability, companies around the world are starting to embrace green technologies and sustainable initiatives as part of their business strategy.

Driven by the country’s commitment to sustainability and the growing demand for sustainable solutions in the Asia-Pacific region, the sustainability sector in Singapore has grown significantly and is projected to continue growing in the coming years. Singapore has identified, under the Singapore Green Plan 2030, the Green Economy as a growth engine that will generate new jobs, with about 55,000 green jobs expected to be created until 2030.

The sustainability sector offers fascinating and rewarding career opportunities for individuals with an avid interest in environmental issues and sustainable development. Sustainability professionals can look forward to job roles across various industries, for instance, built environment, energy and chemicals, financial services, logistics, transport, manufacturing, and more. Regardless of the job role and industry, sustainability professionals must develop a well-rounded skillset, including new green skills.

Green skills are the knowledge, abilities, and technical expertise needed to develop and facilitate environmentally sustainable decision-making in organisations to achieve resource efficiency and tackle environmental challenges posed by climate changes. There is a diverse range of green skills, with some being more transferable across sectors while others are mainly required in specific sectors.

Sustainability professionals with skills in green process design, carbon footprint management, carbon emissions accounting, environmental management system framework, sustainability management, and green facilities management are highly in demand. Additionally, sustainability professionals must have strong analytical and communications skills, as well as strategic thinking and creativity.

In summary, sustainability has become a widely accepted consideration for organisations across various industries. This has thus created sharp rise in demand for sustainability professionals with green skills. Workers with an interest in moving to green jobs can upskill through relevant courses, picking up a broad range of hard and soft skillsets to drive change and help build a more sustainable future.
